Where the Gardens Grow Wild

Beyond the last cottage in Leswyck Hollow, where the woodland path begins to weave between wildflowers and old maple trees, you'll find a little stone cottage tucked beneath a canopy of green.

The air is different here. Lavender sways gently in the breeze, bees hum from blossom to blossom, herbs dry beside the windows, and somewhere nearby a kettle is quietly beginning to sing.

This is Julia's cottage.

The villagers simply call her the herbalist, though Julia has always believed the plants deserve far more credit than she does. She'll happily tell you that nature has a way of looking after us, if only we remember to slow down long enough to notice.

Her shelves are lined with carefully labelled jars filled with herbs gathered from the surrounding gardens and the forest beyond. Every tea is blended with intention, every salve made by hand, and every remedy prepared with patience, kindness, and generations of well-loved knowledge.

People sometimes wonder if Julia is a witch. If she is ... she's the good kind.

She has a remarkable way of helping people feel lighter than when they arrived, whether it's with a warm cup of tea, a quiet conversation beneath the apple tree, or simply reminding them to breathe in the scent of rosemary after a difficult day.

Of course, Julia is rarely the only one welcoming visitors.

Otis is usually first to the garden gate, wagging his tail as though he's been expecting you all morning. Leila keeps a careful watch over the flower beds, convinced every butterfly deserves proper supervision, while Nibbler appears only when he feels the moment is sufficiently mysterious—which, according to Nibbler, is most of the time.

If you step inside the cottage, you'll notice baskets filled with yarn waiting patiently beside her favourite chair. Julia has a habit of crocheting the creatures she meets along the woodland paths—foxes, owls, rabbits, turtles, and woodland friends of every description. She likes to imagine that every little creature carries a story, and perhaps, if taken home by the right person, will become part of a new one.

Lately, however, something rather curious has come to light.

Since the old Enchanted Field Guide of Leswyck Hollow was discovered tucked away in the basement of the library, Marilyn and Gary have begun carefully working their way through its ageing pages. Among the creatures recorded there are several that look remarkably familiar. A peculiar little fox. An unusually shaped owl. Others that are harder to describe. They bear an uncanny resemblance to creatures Julia has crocheted over the years. Julia insists she simply makes whatever comes to mind while she works, although she occasionally admits that some of them begin after a walk through the woods when she has caught sight of something moving between the trees.

Whether Julia has been unknowingly recreating creatures from the Field Guide, or whether the resemblance is simply one of those strange coincidences Leswyck Hollow seems particularly good at producing, no one has quite decided.

Julia, for her part, doesn't seem terribly concerned. She just reaches for another ball of yarn.

Visitors often arrive hoping to find herbs. They usually leave with something much harder to carry. A quieter heart. A gentler outlook. A reminder that healing doesn't always come from grand gestures. Sometimes it begins with a walk through the garden, a warm mug between your hands, and someone willing to listen.

If ever your path brings you back this way, you'll find the gate open, the kettle warm, and a place waiting for you among the flowers.

🌿 A Thought from Julia

"Nature whispers her wisdom every day. You don't have to search for it... only remember to slow down long enough to hear it."
